I have a mental iPod
Imagine having a radio in your head with a dial that you can't control. Such is the fate of a small number of people who have a neurological condition that causes them to have musical hallucinations. These people hear music even when none is being played. 30 patients studied by Dr. Victor Aziz, a phychiatrist at St. Caddoc's Hospital in Wales, reported hearing a variety of music, including "don't cry for me Argentina" and "3 blind mice". 6 reported hearing the hymn "abide with me." Aziz's study also shows that these auditory hallucinations are different from those of schizophrenics, who hear voices as well as music. Instead, the songs arise in special networks of neurons whose only function is to perceive music. Aziz says people tend to hallucinate songs they've heard hundreds of times, or which have special significance to them. In the future, he believes, musical hallucinations will be more common, because people hear music everywhere they go-in elevators, on TV, and through their iPods. "People will hear more pop and classical music than they do now," Aziz tells the New York Times. "I hope I live long enough to find out myself in 20 years' time."

heading back
I think I'll be there around the 24th or 25th. Haven't decided yet. My folks are dropping my sister off at Texas Woman's University on the 23rd, and I figured it would be easiest for them to just drop me off on their way back through Texas --- might be later though, depends on what I have to do around the island to settle my summer.August 12 2005, 20:34:02 UTC 6 years ago
Re: heading back
Yeah, I did that whole "get back right before hell week" thing 3 years in a row. Didn't like it. Now I can get settled in Austin BEFORE selling my soul to LHB.August 13 2005, 04:34:21 UTC 6 years ago

Re: heading back
...LaurenYou'll have Helen and Bunmi back. And Todd most likely. Troy hadn't made up his mind last time I checked with him. I think I'm ready for new adventures...without 50 pounds of wool on.
I'm sure we'll still see you around! Take care!

Re: heading back
Naw, I'm pretty sure Troy isn't coming back. You don't read Texastrumpets.com much, do you? And I kind of figured Lauren wasn't coming back either; it was either both of you or neither. Bah, so many of my friends aren't coming back! This is like Jr. year all over again! I just hope I make as many new friends as I did that year.August 13 2005, 20:48:55 UTC 6 years ago
